What is Pay-per-click (PPC) advertising?
The Pay-per-click (PPC) advertising medium is currently the most effective form of web advertising. The term Pay-per-click comes from the fact the advertiser only pays when the advert is clicked on by a web user. On clicking the advert the web user is taken to the advertisers web-site.
It differs from more conventional forms of web advertising including Banner ads and most advertising found in Print, Radio or TV, the advertiser pays for the advert to be displayed (or per impression).
PPC adverts are typically shown on search engines such as Google, Yahoo or Live where they are marked with the term "Sponsored Link" to differentiate them from the natural search results. PPC adverts are also shown on the Search Engine's "Content" networks. The content networks are made up of web-sites that are paid a small percentage of the click cost to show the ads. The search engines choose where to place the PPC ads based on the content of the web page where the ad is to be shown.
